Sarah Spencer, Diana’s sister who flirted with Prince Charles

Camilla Parker Bowles, since 2005 second wife of Charles of England as well as Duchess of Cornwall, in the early 1970s she was not deemed suitable to become the consort of a future king. Despite the great love he felt for her, Prince Charles had to find himself the “perfect bride”. And so, before choosing Lady Diana in a shortlist of twenty girls eligible for the role (i.e. from a good family and with an immaculate past) he had a brief relationship with Sarah Spencer, elder sister of the late princess. A story now brought back to mind by fourth season of The Crown .

The flirtation between Carlo and Sarah Spencer, which blossomed in 1977, did not last long, just a few months. And it seems that it ended because of the intemperance of her, among other things judged too frivolous, at court, to aspire to become the wife of a future king. The doors of Buckingham Palace, for Lady Sarah, closed permanently when she granted an interview in which she spoke freely about her relationship with Carlo and her past alcoholism and anorexia problems, confessing among other things that he had “Thousands of boyfriends”. As if that wasn’t enough, he admitted that she would never have married Charles “if he had been a street sweeper instead of the future king of England.” That, for the firstborn of Elizabeth II, represented the classic drop that breaks the camel’s back.

Nonetheless, the ex-boyfriends remained friends. It was Sarah who introduced the heir to the throne to her younger sister. His life, meanwhile, took another path: in 1980, a year before royal wedding about Charles and Diana, Sarah, now 65, said “yes” to Neil McCorquodale. The two, parents of three childrenEmily, born in 1983, George (1984) and Celia (1989) – are still happily married.
