Sanne Wevers still in contention for beam final at World Gymnastics Championships despite initial reserve status

Sanne Wevers may still participate in the beam final at the World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp on Sunday. The European beam champion was originally first reserve for the final battle.

Due to Jessica Gadirova’s withdrawal, Wevers is still in the final. Gadirova also withdrew from the all-around final on Friday. The British felt ‘pain’ during the warm-up for the vault part and withdrew from all finals as a precaution.

The 32-year-old Wevers finished in ninth place during the qualifications (13,733 points), which was just not enough for a place in the final. Only the best eight qualified for the final battle.

Wevers delivered her best World Cup performance on beam in 2015, when she surprisingly won silver behind the unapproachable Simone Biles. Wevers won Olympic gold in 2016 and is also the reigning European champion on beam.

Biles also dominates this tournament and with 14.566 points qualified first for the beam final, which takes place on Sunday. On the same day, Naomi Visser takes action on the floor section.
