NEW YORK – A much-loved event in New York City, the annual San Gennaro festival kicked off Thursday in Little Italy.

Music, food, drinks and other live events are all on this year’s event calendar.

Along the way there are also cannoli, zeppole and meatball competitions for all those who like to attend (or participate) in a gastronomic competition. These competitions are scheduled throughout the festival. You can click here for more details.

Saturday at 2 pm the grand procession will take place in which an image of San Gennaro, allegorical floats and a festive musical band will take to the square, and on Monday at 6 pm the solemn Mass of the Patron Saint at the Sanctuary Chiesa del Preziosissimo Sangue at 113 Baxter St ., which will soon be followed by a religious procession.

The feast of San Gennaro has been an annual tradition in New York City since the beginning of the 20th century, when Italian immigrants settled in Manhattan, according to the party’s website.

In 1926, to keep Neapolitan traditions alive, these Italian immigrants decided to organize a one-day neighborhood party for San Gennaro, their patron saint. This tradition has continued year after year, decade after decade, eventually turning into an 11-day event that spanned 11 blocks in Manhattan’s Little Italy neighborhood.

The party takes place on Mulberry Street in Little Italy between Canal and Houston Street and on Hester Street between Baxter and Center Street, as well as on Grand Street between Baxter Street and Center Market Place.

The celebrations will last until 25 September.
