Residents of the Las Flores neighborhood in the municipality of San Francisco Gotera, Morazán, fear that the work carried out by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) and the municipal mayor’s office on the San Francisco River will cause flooding in their homes.
According to the residents, the works are supposed to be precisely to prevent the river from overflowing, but at the discretion of the locals, the work that has been done will make the situation worse.
“What they have done is to deepen the river, but the material that they removed has been left in the middle of the current, that will make the water seek to pass through the other side. We told those who were working that the material they had to take it out to the shore and put it on the edge so that the water does not reach the houses, but they did not pay attention, “said a resident who did not want to be identified.
Villagers claimed that last year they lost a large part of their belongings as river water entered their homes one night and they were unable to rescue anything. “As experts on the behavior of the river, we tell them that the huts have to start higher, and they must remove the material they have left in the middle of the river and make more huts, but they never pay attention,” said Mary Domínguez, another resident.
They called on the MOP and the mayor’s office to listen to their suggestions.
