Samsung’s new folding mobile phone fails the scratch test

For his test reports, Youtuber Zack Nelson regularly checks new devices on his “JerryRigEverthing” channel. This also happened with the new Samsung Galaxy Flip Z, which was officially launched on February 11 and has since been available for just under 1,500 euros.

In his test, Nelson uses different materials, which he pulls across the display in different intensities. The sobering thing: The first scratches can be seen on the surface with an intensity of level 2 out of 10. With a conventional glass display, these would only occur at levels 6 to 7, according to Nelson. Even when scratching with a fingernail, traces appear on the display in the test. With the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung claims to be the first manufacturer to use ultra-thin glass (UTG) for a folding phone and promises special scratch resistance. However, Nelson questions this after his test.

Samsung asked for “TheVerge”Already responded. As the company says, the UTG surface is also covered with a thin layer of plastic. The Nelson test does not reveal whether the scratches can only be found in this plastic layer or in the glass pane.

Samsung offers additional screen protection

For the equivalent of 110 euros, the South Korean company now wants to enable affected customers to change the display once should the surface be damaged. It is also possible to have a special protective cover applied free of charge. “The screen protector is aligned and attached by a specialist with the right equipment. The program will be launched soon, ”said a Samsung statement.

A British Twitter user experienced another fold failure: he shared an image on his account that shows a broken display. After removing the protective film, the smartphone broke at the fold. “I even heard the kink,” he tweeted. Here, too, Samsung reacted quickly and delivered a replacement for the defective device within a day.

Already with the first folding phone from Samsung, the Galaxy Fold, there were problems. The device’s market launch had to be postponed in spring 2019 after several tests revealed weak points on the hinges. Samsung made improvements and retrofitted brushes to protect the hinge and display from dust.
