Samsung to Double Tablet Production by 2022

Jakarta, Selular.ID – The tablet market was stagnant before 2020. Users felt that there was no need to buy a new tablet every year because there were no significant feature additions. And with smartphone screen sizes getting bigger, it seems that the demand for tablet devices is dwindling.

But with the onset of the pandemic and consumers suddenly working from home, they started buying tablets to help with their work. Children schooled from home because of the pandemic need tablets to help them “attend” class every day. So, both adults and children need new tablets to help them stay normal. And at the end of the day, both can use their tablet to entertain themselves by watching streaming movies and playing video games.

During the second quarter of its 2021 fiscal year, Apple reported iPad revenues jumped 79% up from $4.37 billion to $7.81 billion. Samsung is also active in the tablet market, and is rumored to be continuing next year as the company is predicted to increase production of its Galaxy Tab devices by 6% according to TheElec.

Samsung is aiming to ship 34 million Galaxy Tab devices next year, which would be a 6% increase on this year’s device shipments. That’s double the 3% increase in Samsung-registered Galaxy Tab shipments for 2021 from 2020. This year, the manufacturer saw 32 million Galaxy Tabs shipped compared to 31 million the previous year.

The report adds that Samsung will manufacture 400,000 units of the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, 900,000 Galaxy Tab S8+, and 1.2 million Galaxy Tab S8 tablets starting in the first quarter of next year. Also starting in Q1, Samsung will start production of 11 million Galaxy Tab A8 models and an equal number of Galaxy Tab A7 Lite.

Starting in the third quarter of 2022, 1.6 million units of the Galaxy Tab S8 Lite will be produced. The more expensive the model, the less number of units it will launch off the assembly line. Elec says by 2022, more than 60% of Galaxy Tab production will cover the low- and mid-range Galaxy A series.

To save development costs, the Galaxy Tab A series is manufactured using a Joint Development Manufacturer (JDM). This allows Samsung to work with third parties in the design and procurement of parts.

The latest data compiled by Canalys shows that for the third quarter of 2021, Samsung saw a 20.2% decline in worldwide tablet shipments from 9.03 million to 7.21 million. The company controlled 19.1% of the global tablet market during the quarter, placing it second only to Apple and 40.4% of the global tablet pie from July to September.
