Samsung Dominates South Korean Smartphone Market in Q3 2023 with Z Flip 5 and Fold 5

KOMPAS.com – Samsung and Apple are the two largest cellphone vendors in South Korea, controlling 99 local smartphone markets. Meanwhile, the remaining 1 percent market share is occupied by other vendors, such as Motorola.

Samsung dominates the smartphone market in its home country, for the third quarter (July-September) 2023. According to a report by market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung has succeeded in controlling 83 percent of the cellphone market share in the Ginseng Country.

This automatically makes Samsung the “king” in its own country. This market share was controlled after Samsung sent 3.4 million Galaxy cellphone units to the Korean market during July-September 2023.

Samsung managed to beat Apple, its main rival in the cellphone market, by a large margin in market share. According to Counterpoint data, Apple only managed to secure a market share of 15 percent in South Korea in the third quarter of 2023.

Citizen loyalty and popularity of the Z Flip/Fold 5

Media outlet GizChina details three factors that will make Samsung successful in dominating the South Korean smartphone market in the third quarter of 2023.

First is due to the popularity of the latest foldable cellphone duo Samsung Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 which were released at the end of last July.

This cellphone duo is said to be well received in South Korea. This can be seen from the increase in the number of pre-orders which reached 1.02 million units in Korea alone. This figure has increased from the number of pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 in 2022, which was 970,000 units.

So far, the Flip model has been more popular than the Fold, but now the gap is getting wider. As compiled from ZDNet, Wednesday (15/11/2023), the Galaxy Z Flip 5 accounted for 70 percent of the total pre-orders of 1.02 million. Last year, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 accounted for 60 percent of total pre-orders.

Reason second because of South Korean color loyalty. On the one hand, Samsung is a giant Korean company with a strong brand image. On the other hand, Korean people are also said to prefer buying products made by Korean companies. It is this second combination that helps Samsung maintain its large market share in its hometown.

Reason third are various HP products. Samsung offers a variety of smartphones, from entry level to top class (flagship), from cheap to expensive. This makes Samsung Galaxy cellphone products accessible to many consumers.

Reason fourth is the delay in the launch of the Apple iPhone 15 series in South Korea. The iPhone 15 series was introduced in mid-September 2023, but this cellphone only went on sale on October 13 or in the middle of the third quarter of 2023. This allows Samsung to gain more control over the cellphone market in the third quarter of 2023, before its competitor’s flagship cellphone is marketed in South Korea.
