Samsung and Corning partners for the production of folding displays

Samsung has partnered with Corning – the maker of the often used Gorilla Glass – as “Sammobile” reported. The South Korean manufacturer apparently wants to reduce the production prices for the thin protective layer of the foldable displays, because the previous prices far above CHF 1,000 have so far prevented widespread use of the folding devices. How much cheaper the production will be and whether this will even be felt in the final price is unknown.

According to insiders, it is clear that the new folding phone from Samsung, which is expected under the name Galaxy Fold 2, will appear with UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) instead of the plastic layer on the first Galaxy Fold. However, since the Corning solution is still in development, it is not expected that it will be ready for production before 2021. So the next folding cell phone from Samsung will still appear with a disc from the German manufacturer Schott. Schott had already delivered the surface of the Flip Z smartphone. Corning-Glass will therefore be found at the earliest above the display of the third version of the Galaxy Fold. The launch of the new fold smartphone is expected in August this year.
