Samsung 870 EVO SATA SSD Specs and Pricing Indicates Imminent Announcement

The German edition WinFuture announced that Samsung is going to revive the EVO series of solid state drives. The South Korean giant is about to announce the new Samsung 870 EVO family. The drives, which have already appeared in several online stores in Europe and the US, will have a standard 2.5 “format and support the SATA III interface.

It’s unclear if Samsung will offer the same SSDs in mSATA and M.2 2280 variants as it has done in the past. The exact model of the SSD controller and NAND chips inside the Samsung 870 EVO remains a mystery. If the drive is anything like its predecessor, the Samsung 860 EVO, we can see the use of TLC (three-bit cells) V-NAND memory.

In terms of capacity, the Samsung 870 EVO will not present any surprises. According to WinFuture, Samsung will offer five main storage options: 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. This is to be expected, since Samsung hasn’t released 120GB EVOs since the 850 EVO.

The Samsung 870 EVO is reported to deliver sequential read and write speeds of up to 560 MB / s and 530 MB / s, respectively. This is only 10 MB / s better than the Samsung 860 EVO – not surprising since the Samsung 870 EVO, like its predecessors, is limited to a SATA III interface. Random read and write performance is unknown.

The Samsung 870 EVO could be a modest upgrade to the Samsung 860 EVO if WinFuture’s information about the reliability of the drive is correct. The 4TB variant is supposedly rated at 2,400 TBW (terabytes written), which is the same as the Samsung 860 EVO 4TB. Samsung will likely offer the usual limited five-year warranty.

In terms of cost, the Samsung 870 EVO will retail for between € 70 and € 450 ($ 85 to $ 550), depending on capacity. The German news outlet did not specify where the prices were found, but in the US they could be lower. For reference: Samsung 860 EVO 250GB and 4TB cost $ 44.99 and $ 499.99 respectively in the US.
