Salto Widodo and Shin Tae-yong’s goals in the Opposing camp

Jakarta

The 1996 Asian Cup was the first of its kind Indonesian National team at the continental level. There is a story about an overhead goal Widodo Cahyono Putro and meeting with Shin Tae-yong.

Indonesia has always failed to advance from the qualifying rounds since the first time participating in the 1968 edition. Meanwhile, the Asian Cup has been held three times before Indonesia appeared for qualifying in 1968, namely since 1956, 1960 and 1964.

After failing to enter the main round seven times, Indonesia finally qualified for the first time in the 1996 Asian Cup edition. Rochy Putiray cs at that time topped Group 4 of the Qualification round by winning four points in a 0-0 draw with Malaysia and a 7-1 win over India.

In the main round, Indonesia could not talk much by only being the caretaker of the group which hosted the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and South Korea. But understandably, this is the first time the senior-level Indonesian national team has played in the continental arena.

After all, the results weren’t very bad even though they only won one point from three group stage matches. Danurwindo’s team was actually quite successful by immediately stealing one point by playing 2-2 against Kuwait in the first match.

In particular, Indonesia’s first goal in the Asian Cup was scored in a spectacular manner. Widodo Cahyono Putro, striker Indonesian National team at that time he scored an overhead goal after receiving a pass from the right from Ronny Wabia in the 20th minute.

Even Ronny Wabia succeeded in doubling the lead of the Garuda troops in the 20th minute while bringing his team to a 2-0 lead over Kuwait. Unfortunately the opponent managed to equalize through Hani Al-Saqer in the 73rd minute and Badr Haji Al-Halabeej with an 84th minute penalty.

Widodo’s goal in that match was recently named the best in the AFC version of the Bracket Challenge voting. As many as 72 percent of voters voted for goals Widodo Cahyono Putro in the final round of voting and beat the goal of the Lebanese player, Abbas Chahrour, who only won 28 percent of the support.

In the second match, Indonesia faced a tough challenge by challenging South Korea, the Asian giant who regularly appeared in the World Cup. The experience of speaking is true, Korea won 4-0 through goals from Kim Do-hoon (5 ‘), Hwang Sun-hong (7’ & 15 ‘), and Ko Jeong-woon (55’).

Even so, Indonesia was able to get up by scoring two goals through goals from Ronny Wabia (58 ‘) and Widodo (65’). Unfortunately there were no additional goals until the end of the match so that Indonesia lost 2-4.

Interestingly, Shin Tae-yong also appeared in that match. The man who is now the coach of the Indonesian national team came off the bench in the 33rd minute to replace Roh Sang-rae as recorded by rsssf.

The Indonesian national team then closed its work with a 0-2 defeat to the host UAE. The hosts qualified for the next round as group winners and were accompanied by Kuwait and Korea who finished second and third.

In the next three editions, Indonesia also always qualified for the main round, namely in 2000, 2004 and 2007 when it co-hosted Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. Since then, Indonesia has been on a long hiatus until now.

Regarding Shin Tae-yong’s performance against Garuda troops at the 1996 Asian Cup, this was not the first time he was involved in a match against Indonesia’s representatives in a match. Shin Tae-yong, who during his career only strengthened one club alias one-club men, namely Ilhwa Chunma, first faced Pelita Jaya in the Asian Club Championship (forerunner of the Asian Champions League) 1994/95.

For information, Shin Tae-yong’s club often changes names; starting from Cheonan Ilhwa Chunma, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, and most recently Seongnam FC.

At the Asian Club Championship the following season, 1995, Shin Tae-yong again had the opportunity to face another Indonesian club, namely Persib Bandung. Not only appearing, he also broke into Persib’s goal once in Cheonan Ilhwa Chunma’s 5-2 win.

Eight years later, Shin again had the opportunity to meet Persik Kediri twice in the 2004 Asian Champions League group stage. As a result, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma won 2-1 at Persik’s home, then won a fantastic 15-0 when he turned to host the White Tiger.

The result was recorded as one of the biggest victories in the history of the Asian Champions League. Shin Tae-yong was one of the total 15 goals that occurred that day.

As is known, 15 years ago Shin Tae-yong PSSI appointed to be the coach Indonesian National team by being officially introduced in December 2019. Past experience makes Indonesian football very familiar to this 49-year-old man.
