Sale Chaos at 23 Kika/Leiner Locations: Security Ensures Smooth Operations

The sale at 23 kika/Leiner locations has in many places caused chaos. Security companies are now taking care of bargain hunting.

The announced restructuring process without Self-administration at the furniture chain kika/Leiner was opened on Tuesday at the regional court in St. Pölten. Meanwhile, the branches of bargain hunters continue to be stormed. In some places, security staff ensure that the “biggest sale of all time with massive price reductions” runs smoothly.

In some branches in Lower Austria, such as in Horn, security was on duty on Tuesday. A reader reporter: “I drive by again and again. Sometimes there is very little going on, but at some times you can’t get a parking space.”

In the Mistelbach branch, too, shoppers stormed the Kika on Tuesday in the hope of snagging a bargain. Security personnel were hired to ensure an orderly process: “Two security guards on site always keep an eye on it. People buy everything empty, you can see it on the empty shelves. They all have to have money,” says a customer from Mistelbach.

She herself held back: “With discounts, you tend to buy any dirt that you don’t need anyway.” Bedding, linens, set of pans, decoration – all shelves have been cleared (see series of pictures).

As reported, 23 kika/Leiner locations in Austria have to be closed forever at the end of July. 1,900 employees are about to be laid off. In order to provide them with the best possible support, the Chamber of Labor is organizing works meetings at the affected locations as quickly as possible.

“The fees are paid once until May 2023. So there are currently no open claims. But of course there are countless questions that we will all answer,” says Karoline Neumüller, head of insolvency protection at AK Upper Austria.

By the way, the bankruptcy is really expensive for the taxpayers. Because of the renovation, 80 percent of the 150 million euros (approx. 120 million euros) will have to be written off, warns the GPA trade union. A large part of it should be tax deferrals.
