In March, students from Saint-Ouen College in Pont-Audemer took part in fun spelling and math tests.
AT Pont-Audemer (Eure), the Saint-Ouen college, under the leadership of mathematics and French teachers, participated in three events offering competition to 6th and 5th year students, during the week of March 15 to 21, 2021.
The first challenge organized that week was called Les Dicos d’Or. It was coordinated by the French teacher and the “Projet Voltaire” site. The Voltaire project is an online spelling training service that complements traditional education and allows children to manipulate spelling and grammar rules at their own pace and according to their level. The Saint-Ouen college offers individual access to this paid training to all its students in grades 6 to 3.
Promote the French language
The principle of the Dicos D’Or competition: to promote the French language by making the pupils discover a hundred words which they must give the meaning and spell the spelling. Two teams of seven children were formed, called “La Bande à Virgile” and “La Compagnie des Renards”. The trainings took place from January to March during the evening study time. A first timed event took place internally to allow the teams to compete against each other. The two teams will compete in the final round to be held at the end of May. This year, exceptionally, the final will be held at a distance, the stake being to win a check for € 1,000 for the class.
Mathematics tests
In parallel with this competition in French, mathematics teachers offered their college students the opportunity to participate in the “Race for Numbers” or to “Mathematical Rally”. The Race for Numbers is an international and free event, organized by the AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad) in collaboration with the National Education, which aims to raise awareness of the general public to the cultural aspect. mathematics, showing the essential role they play in the history of mankind. It consists in answering small questionnaires of mental arithmetic and automatisms in arithmetic, aiming for example to find half of 340. The pupils who wished to participate in the event were trained to answer 30 questions in 10 minutes, the 3 best students in each class will be rewarded at the end of May.
The Mathematical Rally of Haute-Normandie, meanwhile, has been organized since 2001 by the Institute for Research on Mathematics Education (IREM) of Rouen, in partnership with other IREMs, notably that of Toulouse which is at the origin of these rallies. The principle is to think as a team on a series of problems. This rally is normally aimed at all 3rd and Seconde students (general and professional) and CM2-6e of the Academy, as well as the children of the School at the hospital (CHU de Rouen), and Terminale and Post-Bac students.
For this particular school year, only the rally for CM2 and 6e classes is organized. And due to the current sanitary conditions, there will not be a final at the university as usual. Indeed, each year, the IREM of Rouen strives to reward the greatest number of children participating in this Rally with checks, outings, prizes … The first test takes place in March in the establishments, during the mathematics week and the final will take place in May 2022 at the University of Rouen on the Madrillet site in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray.
In the end, a prize-giving ceremony will take place internally to reward all the participants of the Dicos D’Or, the Numbers Race and the Mathematical Rally at the end of May, in the grounds of the Collège Saint -Yes.
