The Bern youth and cultural center Gaskessel is to be renovated. The municipal council is applying to the city council for a project loan of 800,000 francs, as announced on Tuesday. The money is to be used to develop a renovation project that eliminates the structural deficits and integrates the gas boiler as well as possible into the future uses of the area. This is what the municipal council writes in its message to Parliament. He is assuming renovation costs of 4.7 million Swiss francs.
For safety reasons, some measures must be implemented immediately, as the municipal council further states. These include emergency exits, fire protection doors and fall protection systems. A building loan of CHF 760,000 is being applied for to the city council. The immediate measures are to be implemented as soon as the city council has approved the building loan and the building permit has been issued.
New quarters
The city is planning a new district with apartments, commercial and service areas, sports halls and school buildings on the derelict gasworks site near the Aare. The time-honored “Chessu” is retained. Plans for a relocation were buried in 2019.
The Gaskessel is one of the oldest youth and cultural centers in Europe. Concerts, parties, theater performances and events of all kinds have been held here since the early 1970s.
