Irish airline Ryanair announced Thursday August 20 that it had reached an agreement with its pilots in Spain to lower their wages by 20% in order to “minimize” job cuts, against the backdrop of reduced flights caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic .

The agreement concluded with the Sepla pilots’ union for four years also includes the establishment of “flexible work systems” allowing productivity gains.

“All this will help minimize the loss of workstations for Spanish pilots,” the company said in a statement.

Ryanair on Monday announced a 20% reduction in the number of its flights in September and October, citing a decrease in bookings due to increased contamination in Europe.

Flights to France and Spain, two countries targeted by the quarantine imposed by the British government, are particularly targeted.

Ryanair, however, explains that it has not reached an agreement with the USO and SITCPLA cabin crew unions, and believes “that the possibility of job losses among Spanish cabin crew (is) now more real than ever”.

To cope with the shock of the pandemic, Ryanair has already announced a restructuring plan including the elimination of 3,000 jobs throughout its network, or 15% of its workforce.

The pandemic resulted in a net loss of 185 million euros between April and June, the first quarter of its staggered fiscal year.
