PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers volleyball tried to slow down Maryland’s momentum by coming back for a third-set victory, but the Terps got the win in four topping the Scarlet Knights 25-19, 25-14, 15-25, 25-18 on Wednesday night at Jersey Mike’s Arena.

The Scarlet Knights dropped to 8-5 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten play while the Terrapins improved to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in league action.

Rutgers had a trio in double-figure kills. Redshirt sophomore Alissa Kinkela notched her second double-double of the year with 15 kills with only two swing miscues and 10 digs Sophomore Taylor Humphrey and freshman Kristina Grkovic each collected 12 apiece. Grkovic also tallied two aces.
Freshman Georgia Lee made her first career start at setter putting up 17 helps while fifth-year senior Alyssa Nayar posted 27 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double.
On defense, redshirt sophomore Rikki Williams notched four total blocks, including a pair of solo stops, while senior Madyson Chitty came up with a match-high 17 digs.

Set 1 (19-25) | Alissa Kinkela led all with four kills while RU served up a trio of aces led by a pair from Kristina Grkovic, but it was the Terps in set one. It was back and forth early as Rutgers rattled off three-straight points including Grkovic’s first ace of the night to give RU an 8-7 edge. Maryland pulled in front behind a 7-0 run, but Rutgers managed to narrow the gap by churning out a 6-3 run to trail 17-14. Maryland, however, remained in front with the Scarlet Knights thwarting set point twice, including another Grkovic ace.

Set 2 (14-25) | The Terps hit a match-best .476 en route to a 2-0 lead. Alissa Kinkella added another four kills. One of her swings tied the frame at 6-6 but Maryland proceeded with eight unanswered for control.

Set 3 (25-15) | After hitting only .100 through the first two sets, momentum shifted for the Scarlet Knights as Rutgers swung .452 for the frame committing only two errors on 31 attacks. Alissa Kinkela led the way once again putting away five kills while Taylor Humphrey and Tina Grkovic collected four kills each with only one attack error between the trio. A 6-2 run helped put Rutgers firmly in the lead at 15-8.

Set 4 (18-25) | While Rutgers tried to force a fifth and deciding set, Maryland came back from its .179 third set hitting percentage to connect at a .412 clip. One of Rikki Williams’ five kills on the night had RU down 11-9, but the Terps extended its advantage with a 6-1 run to pull ahead 17-10. Taylor Humphrey narrowed down the Scarlet Knight deficit to four at 20-16 before the Terps took the win. Kristina Grkovic swung .714 in the frame with six kills on seven swings.

The Rutgers volleyball team hits the road but will be back on TV in its next match. The Scarlet Knights make their way to the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan to meet Michigan State on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. on BTN.
