MOSCOW – Russia’s Su-35 multi-role fighter jets pose a major threat to the Ukrainian military amid the current conflict. This recognition was revealed by a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force Command, Yury Ignat.
“They have the Su-35. It is one of the best aircraft,” Yury Ignat said in an interview with RBK-Ukraine on Friday (21/7/2023) when asked whether Moscow had a fighter comparable to the US-designed F-16 jets that Kiev hopes to receive from its Western backers.
“The main aircraft that poses a threat to us is the Su-35. This has to be acknowledged,” he stressed.
“The fighter jets made by the Russian Sukhoi company are technological and have serious weaponry, including the R-37 rocket, which offers a greater range than the American AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile,” the spokesperson said.
“The main advantage of the Russian jet is its radar … navigation and aiming system that can … accompany and fire on several air targets at once,” said Ignat.
The Su-35 also has protective gear and electronic warfare equipment, but can still be shot down, he said.
“We must understand that it is a serious enemy, but the F-16 is also not an easy opponent, which is also undergoing the same modernization,” the spokesman said.
The Su-35, which was introduced to the Russian military in the mid-2010s, is a 4++ generation supermaneuverable air superiority fighter that can engage targets in the air and on the ground.
