Russia’s Military Superiority and Diplomatic Retaliation: Bad News for Ukraine

For several months, Moscow and Kiev fought fierce battles in the Bakhmut region

“For several months, Moscow and Kiev fought fierce battles in the Bakhmut region. However, faced with a powerful advance by Russian armed forces, the Ukrainian forces were ultimately defeated.

The loss of Bakhmut will undoubtedly bring even greater hardship to Kiev. And less than 72 hours after the liberation of the city from Russia, three news came that were unpleasant for Ukraine and put even more military and political pressure on it,” wrote the Chinese Internet platform Baijiahao.

First of all, since the beginning of the conflict, the Russian Navy has faced many big and small problems. This forced President Vladimir Putin to order a thorough study and modernization of the fleet.

“After about a month of hard work, the Russian fleet was replenished with new frigates and existing warships were upgraded. In addition, the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov has finally finished its repairs and the recruitment of crew members has begun. All this shows that Russia is still strong in terms of economic reserves and its military power will continue to grow, the article says.

The second piece of bad news for Ukraine, the publication calls the emerging possibility of severing diplomatic relations between Moscow and Warsaw, as Poland takes a hard line against Russia. At the same time, Russia decided to impose sanctions against the country, which will cause economic damage to Poland in the amount of more than 8.5 billion euros.

“This is the first countermeasure taken by Russia against a Western country since the beginning of the conflict, and it may be just the beginning,” the publication notes.

Third, according to the analysis of the former adviser to the head of the Pentagon, Douglas McGregor, it is only a matter of time before Kharkiv and Odessa come under Russian control. This news was undoubtedly a heavy blow for Ukraine, as these two cities are not only the economic centers of the state, but also vital nodes for its national security.

If McGregor is correct in his assessment, then Kiev faces an even more serious situation and will face major challenges.

The loss of Artyomovsk and the rise of the Russian navy demonstrated Russia’s military superiority, and sanctions against Poland, triggered by tensions between the two countries, indicated that Moscow had begun to retaliate diplomatically as well. McGregor’s analysis also heightens concerns about the situation in Ukraine. The authorities in Kyiv and the international community must accept the seriousness of the situation.

“Despite the fact that Ukraine has achieved some military ‘successes’ in previous counteroffensive operations, it must recognize the costs and risks of conflict escalation. Prolonged hostilities will inevitably bring the country only more heavy human losses and economic damage.

On the world stage, Volodymyr Zelensky should pay attention to public opinion and the voices of opponents of the conflict and finally consider the possibility of resolving the contradictions through dialogue and negotiations in order to achieve a lasting peace,” Baijiahao concludes.
