MOSCOW – Russian hockey players cannot play against the best teams in the world due to the punishment associated with the military invasion in Ukraine.
And so they participate in smaller tournaments, where they measure their strength against Kazakhstan or Belarus. At the Future Cup under-18 junior tournament, Russian youngsters lost in the final against their peers from Belarus, which some players could not stomach.
The match ended in a 5:5 tie, and so overtime took place. The Belarusians won that, but the winning goal was preceded by a controversial moment. One of the Russian players was rushing towards the Belarusian goal, but was knocked down by an opponent, which the referee did not judge as a foul.
The angry Russians, led by captain Yegor Surin, subsequently refused to accept the prize for second place. A similar gesture was also performed by the talented goalkeeper Piotr Andrejanov, who won the award for the best goalkeeper. However, he refused to take it over and left it on the ice in a reproachful manner. It is Andrejanov who is considered by many to be the biggest favorite for the future draft in the NHL.
