The Russian tuner showed a fresh GAZ-24 Volga with suspension from Toyota
GAZ-24 “Volga” is rightfully considered one of the iconic Soviet cars, which was driven by the party elite of the USSR. Nowadays, such rarities can only be seen in private collections or left to rot somewhere in the backyard. However, once in the hands of self-taught enthusiasts, even such forgotten cars find a second life, turning into real competitors to modern foreign cars. This is exactly the fate that befell the 1978 Volga model described in the article.
Its owner bought the future project for a symbolic amount. Although the car was in more or less decent condition, time had clearly taken its toll. Thus, the body was covered with peeling paint and faded chrome, all the windows were cloudy, and the optics had lost their presentability. New headlights were purchased, foglights were put in order, moldings and the model emblem were updated, modern bumpers and rear-view mirrors were installed. This set of measures was completed by the installation of stylish forged wheels RAYS Payton Place with multi-profile tires measuring 17 inches.
At some point, the author conceived a radical transformation – to turn the Volga into a full-fledged two-door coupe. The car was completely disassembled, the rear doors were welded shut, and the front doors were enlarged. By deepening the A-pillars into the cabin, the front part was also lengthened. Afterwards the car was painted.
At the same time, the interior was being transformed. The rear seats were replaced with a sofa from Toyota Aristo, and Recaro sports seats were placed in front. The front panel, central tunnel and armrest are also borrowed from the Japanese car. The car received power steering and a fully independent suspension from Toyota. The brake system was also modernized with the installation of ventilated discs at the front.
Under the hood of the Volga Coupe fits a 230-horsepower 3-liter 2GZ-GE engine from the Toyota family. It is paired with an automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, as befits a true Volga. The owner proudly calls the resulting car “GAZ-24 GT.” (photo: www.drive2.ru)
