Russian Threat to Baltic Sea Region: Information Warfare and GPS Signal Interference

This is a very difficult balance to find, but it is the task of the state to a large extent on strategic communication, because, for example, simply saying that there is no threat and everything is fine, when at the same time there are other sources that claim the opposite, it is understandable that the society also confusion arises as to who is really right and what is really happening.

At the beginning of this week, the news published by the German tabloid “Bild” spread rapidly in the Latvian media, where, as if referring to secret NATO documents, it is predicted that the alliance is preparing for an attack by Russia at the beginning of next year. The director of the NATO Strategic Communication Center, Jānis Sārts, hastened to point out that this is a training scenario and not an intelligence analysis.

A few days ago, the American think tank “Institute for the study of war” published an assessment that the Kremlin is intensifying information influence operations in order to prepare the ground for a future military attack.

Experts stress that Russia is not preparing for an immediate attack, but it could be part of a strategy to weaken NATO.

The Kremlin is always looking for new ways to influence other countries. Since the invasion of Ukraine, countries in the Baltic Sea region have also encountered interference with GPS signals.

At Christmas, a number of countries in the Baltic Sea region received a special gift, most likely from Russia – unusually high GPS signal blocking activity. It has affected Poland the most, and those in charge in Latvia express confidence that we are safe. At the same time, the last weeks have also seen an increase in Russian information and psychological operations. Is this a scare tactic by the Kremlin or is there cause for concern?
