Russian Rejoice over Wilders’ Victory: Impact on Ukraine and EU

Russians are happy for Wilders

Kremlin propagandists openly rejoiced at the results of the Dutch parliamentary elections, where the far-right Freedom Party and its leader Geert Wilders won the laurels. The Russians claimed that there was panic in Brussels over this fact, but the group of Russia’s friends, along with Orban’s Hungary and Fico’s Slovakia, also gathered the Netherlands.

The politically engaged film director Karens Shahnazarov argued that one should not live in illusions that the Western right-wingers love Russia very much, but that the coming of the right-wingers to power is very beneficial for the latter, as it divides the European Union and reduces Western support for Ukraine. In fact, Russia’s ideal is a world order where each country is “first” for itself, and no representation of the victims of great power aggression is on the international political agenda.

It must be said that the Kremlin’s narrative is conspicuously dominated by the message that the West is turning away and is tired of Ukraine. This trend is especially confirmed by the leaders of such countries as Orbán, Fico and Wilders, besides, as the propagandists claim, it is almost certain that Donald Trump will win the US elections next year, which means that America will also stop supporting Ukraine. Propagandist Igor Korotchenko expressed that the only way out for Ukraine in this situation is peace negotiations, of course, on the terms of Russia.

At the same time, when talking about the events at the front, the Russians once again emphasize what losses the Ukrainians have and how the military equipment supplied by the West is being destroyed. Meanwhile, the latest intelligence released by Britain’s Ministry of Defense indicates that the occupiers have likely suffered some of the highest casualty rates of the war in the past six weeks. In November 2023, the number of Russian losses, as reported by the Ukrainian General Staff, is an average of 931 soldiers per day. Previously, the deadliest month for Russia was March 2023, with an average of 776 casualties per day at the height of Russia’s attack on Bakhmut, according to the British ministry.
