SPÖ appears as “List Ludwig”

As before Kurz and Doskozil, the Viennese SPÖ is now starting with a list name.

The SPÖ Vienna competes in the Vienna election with a name focused on the top candidate. What Sebastian Kurz already used in the last National Council election and Hans Peter Doskozil in the state election, should now also bring success to the Viennese SPÖ.

According to the press information service of the City of Vienna, “SPÖ – SPÖ – Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig” will be on the ballot paper. Nine parties will be on the ballot in Vienna’s municipal council election on October 11th. In addition to the fixed starters SPÖ, FPÖ, Greens, ÖVP and NEOS, another four lists have enough signatures for the candidacy: the HC Strache (HC) team, the Links Alliance (LINKS), the Social Austria of the Future list (SÖZ) from Ex- Member of the National Council Martha Bißmann and the Beer Party (BIER).

The town hall announced that they have all met the necessary requirements for a start and submitted their nominations by the deadline – i.e. by 1 p.m. on Friday. For a city-wide candidacy at the municipal council level, all those parties that did not make it into the city parliament in the 2015 polls or are part of this year for the first time had to collect 100 declarations of support in all of the 18 constituencies.

Three more lists in some constituencies

In addition to the Vienna-wide candidacies, there are three lists that will only appear on the ballot in some constituencies. The pan-European list VOLT tries it in the two constituencies center (districts 1, 4, 5, 6) and inner-west (districts 7, 8, 9). WIFF (Wir für Floridsdorf) competes in the constituency of Floridsdorf, PRO (Pro23 – Ernst Paleta list) in Liesing.

In principle, it is also possible to join the municipal council in one of the constituencies via a basic mandate – although it is usually easier for smaller parties to meet the second criterion, namely five percent of the votes throughout the city.

At the same time, it is now clear who made it onto the ballot in the district council elections. For this, 50 declarations of support were required per district, unless a party had already moved into the respective district parliament in 2015.

The SPÖ, FPÖ, Greens, ÖVP, NEOS, the Strache and Links team compete in all 23 districts. In addition, the beer party is on the ballot in all but the 1st district and SÖZ in all but the 1st, 4th, 6th and 8th district.

In only a few or even individual districts, however, there are VOLT (2nd, 10th and 21st district), the – admittedly not related to the Federal Chancellor of the same name – list KURZ (2nd, 3rd and 16th district), the List VOLK (2nd district) and change (WANDL, 7th district). Pro Hetzendorf (PH) is running in the 12th district, WIR in the 13th, the Austrian Labor Party (PdA) in the 16th district as well as WIFF and Mein Wien (WIEN) – the list of EU exit party founder Robert Marschall – in 21st district and PRO in the 23rd district.

Who will finally stand as a candidate in Vienna will be announced after the meetings of the city electoral authority and all district electoral authorities on August 28, 2020.
