Russian Luna 25 Mission Crash Site: Recent Discovery on Moon’s Surface by NASA

PROGRES.ID – The United States Space Agency, NASA, said that a 10-meter crater recently discovered on the moon may be the crash site of the Russian Luna 25 mission.

This Russian mission aimed to land gently on the south pole of the moon last August, but unfortunately the spacecraft failed and crashed on the surface of the moon.

NASA explained that the Russian spacecraft, Luna 25, encountered an anomaly that caused it to crash on August 19.

Interestingly, Russia has images of the area around the crash site taken in June 2022, and at that time, no craters were visible in the area.

“Since this new crater is close to the estimated crash point of Luna 25… it is very likely that the crater appeared as a result of the mission, not as a result of a natural crater formation process,” said the report issued by NASA.

Even though Russia’s latest moon mission was a failure, it’s important to remember that Russia had an impressive history in the space program in the 20th century. They successfully launched Sputnik, the first satellite to orbit the Earth, in 1957, and also sent the first human, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, into space in 1961.
