Russian iRU offers personal computers composed of home components

IRU is one of the major Russian PC manufacturers and has now decided to reach those customers who will especially appreciate home hardware. Of course, it will hardly be computers that use Russian hardware to the last screw, far from it. It is the main, namely the processor, motherboard and operating system.

Of course, there will be no cannons and asphalt blasters, quite the opposite. The Baikal-M processor platform from Baikal Electronics is used here, ie processors with eight older ARM Cortex-A57 cores (year 2012) at 1.5 GHz, 8 MB L3 cache and integrated Arm Mali-T628 graphics. Furthermore, this PC can be equipped with up to 32 GB of DDR4 memory and 1TB SSD or 3TB HDD. IRU offers installation of Astra Linux, Alt OS, Red OS or other systems on these repositories, including various other Russian software.

The Baikal-M SoC with 35W TDP also offers six USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, 16 PCIe 3.0 lines, two 1GbEs and even two 10GbEs. Baikal Electronics has them manufactured in TSMC’s factories using a 28nm process, ie production is not taking place in Russia, but this is primarily a design of the SoC.

Russia, like China, is trying to free itself from Western hardware and technology, but the approach and capabilities of these countries are incomparable. It can be said that China, unlike Russia, would actually be able to produce these computers to the last screw, as it already has a 28nm production process, including the necessary tools, also produces DRAM and NAND Flash memories on its territory, and thus of course could handle create the necessary modules with DDR4 or SSD, while the production of motherboards, power supplies, cabinets and other things is a matter of course.

In the case of Russia, however, it is primarily an effort to use from its own resources at least the most important hardware and software, in the case of government agencies, organizations and state-owned companies. This may work for purely office systems, but if performance, whether CPU or graphics, is really needed, it will not work without Western products, but so is China.
