Russian Disinformation Targeting NATO and Bulgaria Exposed: Government Responds with Facts

Two years after the start of Russia’s war against independent Ukraine, attempts to maliciously manipulate information continue, including with the aim of reducing trust in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which Bulgaria joined 20 years ago. This was stated in a post on the Facebook page of the Council of Ministers entitled “Facts against disinformation”.

The government states that the information that NATO is preparing a large-scale conflict in the Black Sea is fake news, as well as that Varna was discussed at the forum in Davos to be used for such a naval base.

All NATO capabilities are aimed at deterrence and defence, with decisions subject to democratic and political control. Even just discussing aggression against other countries is practically impossible, as this contradicts the founding document of NATO – the Washington Treaty, the government specifies.

Bulgaria plans to create a Coordination Element for situational awareness, which has nothing to do with the concept of a “naval base” and does not include the deployment of naval assets. Bulgaria has the right to receive a complete situational picture of the situation at sea, precisely because of the proven aggressive actions of Russia, including by blocking a significant part of the Bulgarian Exclusive Economic Zone in the Black Sea, the publication also says.

It is not by chance that Russian propaganda directs attention to Varna. This is the city that Moscow bombed twice during the First World War, at the cost of a number of casualties among the civilian population and significant destruction of residential buildings, the Council of Ministers said.

From there, they remind that NATO does not discuss its actions in public formats, and in this sense, claims of discussions on such topics in Davos are clear disinformation.

Today Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov together with a delegation led by him visited Kyiv. There, the Prime Minister held meetings with the country’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Denis Shmigal, at which he confirmed Bulgaria’s support for Ukraine.
