The Russian Armed Forces are using modernized Pantsir-SM anti-aircraft missile and gun systems (ZRPK) in the special military operation zone; they demonstrate increased effectiveness in relation to the basic version of the system, RIA Novosti reports today, December 19, citing an informed source.
“For some time now, the latest Pantsir-SM air defense systems have been used in the Northern Military District zone, which demonstrate significantly increased combat effectiveness in relation to the basic version of the complex, Pantsir-S. The main advantage of the new vehicles is significantly longer ranges for detecting, tracking and hitting targets. Including such complex ones as mini-UAVs, guided artillery shells and high-speed ballistic targets,” the agency’s interlocutor said.
At the beginning of January of this year, another RIA Novosti source reported that Russian air defense in the special operation zone would be strengthened with the latest Pantsir-SM.
According to open data, Pantsir-SM received a new target detection radar with a phased array antenna with improved characteristics in terms of detection range of air targets, noise immunity and resolution. The improved air defense missile system is also equipped with a multifunctional target tracking and missile guidance radar. The new complex sees small targets at a range of up to 75 kilometers, and when using anti-aircraft guided missiles at hypersonic speed, the interception range increases to 40 kilometers – this is twice as much as that of Pantsir-S.
Previously, it was also reported about the development of small-sized anti-aircraft guided missiles to combat small drones and copters. Thus, four small-sized missiles are placed in one standard Pantsir transport and launch container. In its maximum load mode, the new Pantsir-SM is capable of firing a salvo of 96 missiles, repelling attacks from several “swarms of drones” at once.
