Russian Ambassador Attacked in Warsaw during Wreath Laying Ceremony

WARSAW – Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergey Andreyev is splashed with red paint at a wreath-laying ceremony in Warsaw, Monday (9/5/2022).

The diplomat was attacked during a ceremony honoring Red Army soldiers who died during World War II.

One video from the event shows Andreyev surrounded by a group of protesters with Ukrainian flags.

May 9 is the day Russia and several other countries celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany and its allies.

The Ukrainian Rebel Army partnered with Germany during the conflict. Its leader Stepan Bandera was a well-known Nazi collaborator and is considered a hero by the modern Kiev government.

The Russian Embassy said last week that Polish authorities had “recommended” canceling this year’s traditional wreath-laying ceremony, as well as the Perpetual Regiment march when people carried portraits of relatives who fought in the war.
