Russia vetoes a resolution at the UN that considers climate change a threat to peace

Russia vetoes in the UN Security Council a resolution in which climate change is considered “a threat to international peace and security.”

The proposal, spearheaded by Niger and Ireland, called for information on the implications of this threat for security to be incorporated into the Council’s strategies for managing conflict and in peacekeeping operations on certain occasions.

Likewise, the measure requested that climate-related security risks be considered as a central component of conflict prevention efforts, and that security risks be duly informed on how to address said risks.

The motion for a resolution recalled how events such as floods, storms, droughts and other effects of current climate change could negatively influence social tensions and conflicts, with the consequent risk that this entails for world peace and stability.

113 of the 193 member countries voted in favor of the resolution. Moscow, a member of the Council and with the right to veto, voted against it, considering that it would politicize scientific and economic issues and that it would give the Council a pretext to intervene in any country. India also voted against, while China abstained.
