Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi unveiled prototype meluncurkan new fighter jet featuring stealth capabilities and other advanced characteristics. Sukhoi is developing the new fighter under the LTS program, the Russian acronym for Light Tactical Aircraft.

Its makers say the prototype will make its maiden flight in 2023 and deliveries could begin in 2026. They say the new design can be converted to a pilotless version and a two-seat model.

The new aircraft, which has yet to be named, is smaller than Russia’s newest Su-57 two-engine stealth fighter, also made by Sukhoi, and has one engine.

“This aircraft can fly at a speed of 1.8-2 times the speed of sound and has a range of 3,000 kilometers,” said Sukhoi.

Russian state company Rostec, which includes Sukhoi and other aircraft makers, has advertised the new aircraft under the Checkmate tag, an approach apparently meant to underscore its superior characteristics.

It is said that the new fighter has what is referred to as a fifth-generation fighter jet, a definition that assumes stealth characteristics and the ability to fly at supersonic speeds, among other advanced features.

Rostec says the new design includes artificial intelligence features to assist pilots and other innovative technologies. It said the jet was designed to reduce service costs and be easily adapted to various customer needs.
