The West 2021 exercise will continue until Thursday
Russia is using new combat robots and tactical vehicles on the second day of the active main phase of major military maneuvers with Belarus, the Defense Ministry said, quoted by Reuters.
The West 2021 exercise, which will run until Thursday, is being held near the EU border and has caused concern among some NATO countries and Ukraine.
The Platform-M combat robots are self-propelled machines, remotely controlled and armed with a grenade launcher and machine gun, the ministry said in a statement. According to Russian news agencies, this technique is being used for the first time.
The new Sarmat-2 tactical vehicles were also tested in the maneuvers.
President Vladimir Putin denies that the exercises are directed against a foreign power and says they are logical, given the increased activity of NATO and its allies along Russia’s borders.
