The independent Russian radio Echo of Moscow announced today that it has decided to liquidate itself after the Russian authorities took it off the air because of the way it covered the invasion of Ukraine, AFP reported.

“The majority of the members of the board of directors of Echo of Moscow have decided to liquidate the radio and the Echo of Moscow website,” the radio’s editor-in-chief Alexei Venediktov wrote in his Telegram account, BTA reported.

Authorities blocked access to the Echo of Moscow and the independent Dozhd TV channel on Tuesday because of the way they covered what was happening in Ukraine, AFP reported.

Russia’s media regulator Roskomnadzor has banned Russian media from using words such as “war” and “invasion” for the actions of Russian forces in Ukraine and instructed them to use the “special operation” approved by the authorities, AFP reports.

The Echo of Moscow, in which gas giant Gazprom has a majority stake, was established in 1990, at the end of the Soviet Union, and has established itself as one of Russia’s most respected media outlets. Until this week, it remained one of the few places where people with opposition views could express their opinion, notes AFP. Its editor-in-chief, Venediktov, also kept in touch with the Kremlin.
