Russia arrests the director of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after annexing Ukrainian territories

Russia arrested the director general of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) a Ukraine occupied by Russia. The Ukrainian nuclear agency, Energoatom, spoke about the detentions on Saturday (1/10).

Zaporizhzhia – Europe’s largest nuclear power plant – has been at the center of tensions in recent weeks after Moscow and Kiev accused each other of carrying out attacks in PLTN Zaporizhzhia and beyond, arousing fears of an atomic catastrophe.

The news agency reports AFPOn Saturday (1/10/2022), Energoatom chief Petro Kotin said in a statement on social media, Ihor Murashov was arrested by the “Russian patrol” on Friday (30/9) around 4pm local time as he was arriving from the nuclear power plant to the city of Energodar, controlled by Moscow.

He said Murashov’s vehicle was stopped, then he was taken out of the car and “with his eyes closed, he was driven in an unknown direction”.

Kotin said Murashov “has primary and sole responsibility for nuclear and radiation safety.” PLTN Zaporizhzhia.

The nuclear power plant is located in the Russian-controlled territory in the Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainewhich Russia annexed on Friday along with three other territories in Ukraine: Donetsk, Lugansk and Kherson.

The assault on the nuclear power plant prompted Kiev and its Western allies to demilitarize the vicinity of the nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

Previously, a UN monitoring group visited Zaporizhzhia in early September.
