The members UN Security Council voted again regarding the ceasefire Israel and Hamas which is still ongoing today. This was done after they were divided in a discussion that took place on Tuesday (24/10).

Russia and China, as reported by Reuters on Wednesday (25/10), vetoed the resolution drafted by the US on the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The US draft resolution focuses on addressing the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The US also called for an end to violence so as to allow access to aid which Israel has blocked for some time.

In the vote, the United Arab Emirates voted “no” to the US resolution, the other 10 members voted “in favor”, Brazil and Mozambique abstained.

The UNSC then began voting on Russia’s proposed resolution. The Russian document, as reported by AFP, calls for an “immediate, durable and fully respected humanitarian ceasefire” and “condemns all violence and hostility against civilians.”

However, the resolution failed to get the minimum number of votes. Only Russia, China, the UAE and Gabon support the proposal. Nine members abstained, while the US and UK voted “no.”

A resolution needs at least nine votes and no vetoes from the United States, France, Britain, Russia or China to take effect immediately.

The vote came after the council twice failed to reach a vote last week, with just five members backing Russia’s draft resolution on Oct. 16 and then the U.S. vetoing Brazil’s draft text on Oct. 18, which received 12 votes in favor.

The US submitted its draft resolution on Saturday (21/10) and surprised some diplomats by bluntly stating that Israel has the right to self-defense and demanding that Iran stop exporting weapons to militant groups.

They later toned down the overall draft, removing direct references to Iran and Israel’s right to self-defense.

However, Russia on Tuesday (24/10) announced that it could not support the US action plan and submitted its own proposal.

Previously, Israel had promised to destroy Hamas, which controls Gaza, after the militant group broke through the fence surrounding the enclave on October 7 and killed 1,400 people.

Israel has since pounded Gaza from the air, laying siege and preparing for a ground offensive. Palestinian authorities say more than 5,700 people have been killed in the enclave.

Not only that, the UN said around 1.4 million people were displaced by the war between Israel and Hamas.
