He was detained in 2019 in occupied Horlivka, after which he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for allegedly spying for the Ukrainian special services.
Denisova called on the head of the Red Cross mission in Ukraine, Florence Gillette, to visit the colony in which Makarets died and to check the circumstances of his death, as well as the state of respect for the rights of other detained persons.
According to information “Graty”, a resident of Gorlovka Makarets from February 2017 to May 2018 served as a driver for the invaders in an engineer-sapper company of one of the military units of the “DPR”. After completing his service, he left for Bakhmut, which is under the control of the Ukrainian authorities.
