It has been certain since February: Braunschweig will have a new mayor in September. Lord Mayor Ulrich Markurth (SPD) had declared that he would not stand again. In Lower Saxony’s second largest city, the SPD applicant Thorsten Kornblum was ahead of Kaspar Haller (CDU) in the first round of the mayoral elections on September 12 – but it was not enough to win the first attempt. There will therefore be a runoff between the two candidates on September 26th. Around 200,000 Braunschweig residents were entitled to vote. Candidates in addition to Kornblum and Haller were Tatjana Schneider (Greens), Mirco Hanker (AfD), Birgit Huvendieck (BIBS), Anke Schneider (Die Linke), Thomas Hofmann (The Party), and Erdmann Gust (individual nomination).

One thing is certain: Göttingen’s fortunes will be guided by a woman in the future. The decision will be made in the runoff between Doreen Fragel (Greens, left) and Petra Broistedt (SPD).

In Wolfsburg there is a runoff between Iris Bothe (SPD) and Dennis Weilmann (CDU). After ten years in office, the long-time mayor Klaus Mohrs (SPD) no longer ran. In Göttingen, the chief post in the town hall is also being filled. The decision about the successor to the current Mayor Rolf-Georg Köhler is made between Petra Broistedt (SPD) and Doreen Fragel (Greens), who was able to prevail with a wafer-thin lead over the CDU candidate Ehsan Kangarani.

Runoff election and allegations in Goslar

In Goslar, incumbent Oliver Junk (CDU) and challenger Urte Schwerdtner (SPD) compete against each other in the runoff election for the office of Lord Mayor. In the first round of local elections on September 12, Schwerdtner got 49.4 percent of the vote, junk got 32.1 percent. The Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior initiated disciplinary proceedings against him on September 10th. He is suspected of having manipulated files in an award procedure. Junk defends itself against the allegations.
