Of all 164 smartphones that have been in the Pricewatch since 1 January 2020 and for which a refresh rate has been specified, 54 have a screen of 90Hz or higher (33%), 26 have a screen of 120Hz or higher (16%) and 4 have a screen of 144Hz (2%).
However, if we only look at the smartphones that now cost € 600 or more, these ratios are very different: respectively 85% has 90Hz or higher, 56% 120Hz or higher and 9% 144Hz or higher.
90Hz is clearly the minimum for a high-end device in 2020 and 120Hz is the standard.
In 2021 you will most likely not get away with introducing a high-end device that does not have at least a 120Hz screen, and 144Hz will be used to distinguish the device. I also expect 90Hz as standard for the mid-range, with a 120Hz variant here and there. The screens are readily available, so are the SoCs, so only the real budget devices will do with 60Hz.
In that respect, a 120Hz screen is not that big news for a device of € 1000 +.
