Volley-ball

The decision in the appeal procedure against the suspension of volleyball coach Gert Vande Broek will not be made until June 20.

The federal public prosecutor’s office has not yet made a substantive decision on Friday in the appeal procedure that former Yellow Tigers national coach Gert Vande Broek had started against his one-year suspension. The final ruling is due on June 20.

All parties must further clarify their positions, as the hearing of the federal public prosecutor’s office learned. In particular, the public prosecutor’s office must provide more information about which offenses the national coach is specifically accused of, in what period they were committed and who was the victim. A number of procedural issues were also discussed on Friday.

On June 16 last year, Vande Broek – national coach, coach at Asterix and a central figure in Belgian women’s volleyball – was told that he would be relieved of all his positions for a year. Since a VRT broadcast in December 2021, he has been chased by testimonies about mentally transgressive behavior, body shaming and abuse of power.

Gert Vande Broek appealed against the suspension, but for the sake of serenity he stepped aside as coach of the Yellow Tigers.

The appeal procedure led to an interim ruling on Friday, the final ruling has been postponed to June 20, so more than one year after the suspension was imposed. (pl)
