The International Automobile Federation (FIA) will declare a Formula 1 world champion on the basis of an emergency measure if, due to coronavirus restrictions, the races on at least three continents fail to take place during the season, as required by the rules. According to Auto, Motor und Sport magazine, the FIA intends to appeal to force majeure due to the pandemic.

According to the FIA International Sporting Code, races need to be held on at least three continents in order for the series to be considered a world championship. At present, however, Formula 1 has a thirteen Grand Prix scheduled in the reduced calendar only in Europe.
The inaugural Grand Prix in Australia had to be canceled, all races on the American continent were canceled this week – it will not take place in Canada, the USA, Mexico or Brazil. The planned races in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi are still awaiting official confirmation, as are other Asian events in Vietnam and Malaysia.
