Ruedi Widmer: Honored for His Contributions to Social and Cultural Life in Winterthur

The city council would like to honor Ruedi Widmer’s work and his contributions to social and cultural life in Winterthur with the 2023 Culture Prize, as he writes in a media release. The winner receives prize money of 10,000 francs.

Ruedi Widmer, born in Winterthur in 1973, is a graphic artist, cartoonist and columnist. After the preliminary course at the School of Design in Zurich, he completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer. Today he mainly works independently in Winterthur. In 1995 Ruedi Widmer began drawing cartoons. Since 2000, his articles have appeared regularly in Swiss newspapers such as the “Wochenzeitung” (WoZ), the “Tages-Anzeiger”, the “Magazin”, the consumer magazine “Saldo”, the German satirical magazine “Titanic” and the Winterthur newspaper “Der Landbote”. ». The latter has been publishing Widmer’s cartoon column “The Last Secrets of a Rational World” every week for over 20 years.

Widmer’s work has been shown several times in Winterthur at solo exhibitions in the Alte Kaserne and in the Salon Erika on the Schützenwiese. However, his work radiates far beyond the city limits. Since 2010, he has been showing his work at the annual group exhibition “Drawn – the best cartoons of the year” in Bern and at the cartoon festival “Bissfest” in Baden. Widmer’s works can currently be seen in the Caricatura in Kassel (D) on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Swiss Federal Constitution.
