Ruben Loftus-Cheek appear as a starter when Chelsea crush Southampton in week 7 Premier League. The England midfielder is the solution Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea host Southampton with a slightly different line-up. Trevoh Calobah, Ben Chilwell, and Loftus-Cheek started as starters.
With a 3-4-3 formation, Chelsea appear promising. The first goal could be scored in the 9th minute, through Chalobah’s action.
However, Southampton could equalize the score in the second half through a penalty. James Ward-Prowse changed the score to 1-1.
When Southampton was given a red card, after Ward-Prowse violated Jorginho, Chelsea could make two more goals. Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell ensure the hosts won 3-1.
After the match, the spotlight was on Loftus-Cheek. The 25-year-old is finally able to return to the starting XI after 384 days out.
Loftus-Cheek performances, with Mateo Kovacic in midfield box-to-box, make Chelsea’s midfield so solid. At the same time, the Blues’ attacking transition became more fluid, which made the forwards receive a lot of the ball.
Tuchel explained why he played Loftus-Cheek in the first place. Even though N’Golo Kante is currently in isolation due to positive COVID-19, Loftus-Cheek was played because he was good at turning things around on the field.
“We decided to put Ruben on, because we are aware of their high pressing in the middle, but we also want to penetrate the midfield,” said Tuchel.
“Ruben and Kova can not only pass, but flow the ball to release pressure. That’s the reason we chose them,” he explained.
Victory over Southampton makes Chelsea temporarily back to the top of the Premier League standings. The Blue collected 16 points.
