Rows of Places Removed by UNESCO from World Heritage, RI Threatened

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaUNESCO erase the city of Liverpool, English from the list of ‘World Heritage’ sites. This was ratified at the 44th virtual committee session which took place in Fuzhou, China Wednesday (22/7/2021).

“Our World Heritage Committee has decided to remove Liverpool, Maritime Mercantile City from the World Heritage list. This is due to the loss of attributes that convey the extraordinary universal value of the region,” UNESCO said in a statement.

This decision was taken due to new developments in the area. One of them is the construction of a football field for Everton FC in the Bramley-Moore Dock area which is considered “detrimental to the authenticity and integrity of the historic site”.

The Bramley-Moore Dock area itself is one of the areas included in the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City complex. During the UNESCO session, as many as 20 votes were cast, with 13 in favor of removing the city from the list, five against the proposal and two invalid ballots.

The city of Liverpool was previously awarded the title of historic site in 2004. This is due to its historical and architectural impact as a major trading center during the British Empire.

The city is side by side with other historical places. There is also the Taj Mahal from India, the Pyramids in Egypt and the Canterbury Cathedral.

However, the City of Liverpool is not the only site that has been removed from the UNESCO list. Previously there was the Elbe Valley in Dresden in Germany and the Arab Oryx Sanctuary in Oman which lost this status,
