Jan Frodeno (38) is participating in Ironman Hawaii again this year. A fatigue fracture in his hip stopped him in 2018. Defending champion Patrick Lange will also start in Kailua-Kona. Sebastian Kienle (35), Ironman winner from 2014, also qualified for the prestige race. The German professional men’s team is completed by Andreas Böcherer, Maurice Clavel, Tobias Drachler, Andreas Dreitz, Marc Dülsen, Nils Frommhold, Franz Löschke, Lukas Krämer, Stefan Schumacher and Boris Stein.

Who are the favorites of Ironman 2019?
The fans can hope for a German winner this year. The previous season’s performances – above all by Jan Frodeno and to a lesser extent by Patrick Lange and Sebastian Kienle – suggest that at least one German can compete for the title. Frodeno, Lange and Kienle are definitely among the contenders for the title.

In addition to the German favorite trio, Bart Aernouts (35) from Belgium is likely to be a candidate for the top spots. He finished second last year and, like Sieger Lange, also beat the 8-hour mark. The Canadian and ex-professional cyclist Cameron Wurf (36) also has chances of winning. He was on the podium for a long time last year and ended up in ninth place. David McNamee (31) from Great Britain could also top the podium this year after two third places in 2017 and 2018.

The Swiss Daniela Ryf is the clear favorite among women. The fastest triathlete in the world can win the title for the fifth time in a row. The German Anne Haug (36), who finished third in 2018, has a slight chance of being an outsider. For Laura Philipp (32), a place in the top five is also within reach.
