Rotterdam mayor Aboutaleb is taking measures against YouTuber Divaio (21). His giveaway caused chaos in Rotterdam’s Zuidplein shopping center on Friday evening. In the event of a subsequent violation, Divaio must pay a fine. Aboutaleb is also threatening an area ban, writes the regional broadcaster Rijnmond.
The YouTuber promised to give away a game console in the shopping center to one of his more than 100,000 followers. That call caused a lot of commotion and considerable unrest: young people present set off fireworks and attacked the police.
Ultimately, the shopping center had to close and the help of the police and riot police was needed to restore order. A number of shopkeepers and customers present told the regional broadcaster last weekend that they had a had an anxious evening.
No license
The giveaway was not registered as an event with the municipality and therefore no permit was granted, although this should have been. “What happened here is not possible,” Aboutaleb ruled today in a debate with the municipal council. “I will therefore impose a penalty on the YouTuber.”
In the event of a subsequent violation, Divaio will receive a hefty fine. In addition, the YouTuber will be “closely monitored” in the near future and invited for an interview at the town hall.
Aboutaleb also promised the council to consult with other mayors to prevent actions like this from getting out of hand in the future. In November, Divaio also caused unrest with a giveaway, then in the center of The Hague.
Area ban
The Rotterdam mayor said he was busy building a file against the YouTuber. “If he does this again, he risks an area ban,” Aboutaleb said. “If he wants to give away a game console, he can also hand it in at the town hall. Then I will ensure that the device gets a good destination.”

Divaio told Rijnmond last week that he finds it annoying how the giveaway went. “I did not expect that the police would have to respond. I certainly plan to do things differently from now on, perhaps even make a different type of videos.” The 21-year-old Divaio makes so-called prank videos: videos in which he fools people.
