Local authorities will soon be able to deploy unmanned cameras to check for an entry ban for trucks, for example in the vicinity of a school. The plenary meeting of the House has given the green light for this tonight.

In recent years, many local authorities have introduced entry bans or window times for heavy traffic in the vicinity of schools or village centers. But it is difficult to check this, because the police are only allowed to physically detect violations in the act.
–
A bill by Vooruit Member of Parliament Joris Vandenbroucke that was approved in the House this evening, will change that. After all, it will soon also be possible to check automatically, with unmanned cameras.
–
According to Vandenbroucke, this will improve safety. “If we want safe school environments, then the chances of heavy freight traffic ignoring the ban in school environments must be increased. What good are rules if they are not monitored? With these simple adjustments we ensure that no heavy freight traffic is still near children.” ventures during the busiest times around our schools,” he says.

The proposal received the support of the majority parties. N-VA, Vlaams Belang and PVDA abstained.
