Monkey Island developer Ron Gilbert says he is no longer talking about Return to Monkey Island after “personal attacks” he endures online.

He made that known on his own blog† The negativity surrounding Return to Monkey Island, which was revealed earlier this year, is too much for him, in his own words. That’s why he turns off the comments on his blog and won’t share anything about the upcoming game himself, you can read on VGC† His blog is even offline at the moment.

Gilbert and the entire team behind the game have been criticized for Return to Monkey Island’s graphical style. This style is different from the classic Monkey Island games, much to the dismay of fans.

“I’m turning off the comments. People are mean I have to remove personal attacks. It’s a great game and everyone on the team is very proud of it. Play it or don’t play it, but don’t ruin it for others. I won’t go any more sharing about the game. The fun that gave me is gone.”

Earlier this week, it was announced that Return to Monkey Island will at least be the first to come to PC and Nintendo Switch. There is no exact release date yet, but the game should be released sometime this year. The first gameplay of the game was also shown, which can be viewed again below.

Return to Monkey Island is a sequel to the first two Monkey Island games. Gilbert is co-creating the game with his studio Terrible Toybox, in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games. The game is to be a direct sequel to the first two games from 1990 and 1991, Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge.

While it’s not a direct sequel to later sequels – 1997’s The Curse of Monkey Island, 2000’s Escape from Monkey Island, and 2009’s Tales of Monkey Island – the canon from those games is also taken into account as much as possible.
