Romuald Geikin’s art has always been outside. We get acquainted with his exhibition “Convergence” / LR1 / / Latvian Radio

From June 26, Romuald Geikin’s solo exhibition “Convergence” will be on display at the Latvian National Museum of Art. Romualds Geikins is a philosophical artist, freely interprets the initiatives and interactions of different cultures, periods, directions in his compositions. His art has always been outside, especially in Soviet times.

In the exhibition halls of the 4th floor of the Latvian National Museum of Art you can see about 100 paintings, watercolors, sketches, drawings and miniatures by the author, made from the mid-60s to the present day. Romuald Geikin’s exhibition takes place in the museum program cycle “Generation”. The exhibition is presented by the artist Romualds Geikins and the curator of the exhibition Irēna Bužinska.

Walking around the exhibition with the author and the curator of the exhibition is always valuable, even for those who are familiar with the artist’s work. It is a great opportunity to learn the nuances of creating works, the people depicted, as well as important events of your time. In the first hall, the curator of the exhibition Irēna Bužinska wanted to combine two things that are naturally formed in the works of Romuald Geikins – in addition to large multi-figure compositions, also to show miniature paintings and watercolors.

The artist has been an oppositionist. There are works that have never been exhibited during the Soviet era or later. Irēna Bužinska brings to the colorful, brightly abstract works, they were made in 1972 and shown in an exhibition that lasted only a few hours, this is confirmed by Romualda study member Jānis Strupulis.

There are many layers of culture in the artist’s work. It should be reminded here how little was known and could be learned from Western modernism in the late 1960s and early 1970s, emphasizes Irēna Bužinska. The artist had to compose a lot from the world of colors, from the composition himself. We are in another hall, where drawings of study time and even works made before the start of studies.

The cycle of exhibitions “Generation”, which also includes an exhibition by Romuald Geikin, draws attention to those artists who entered art during the Soviet era. The idea for this cycle belongs to Elita Ansone, the head of the department of the second half of the 20th century at the Art Museum.

Under Soviet conditions, Romuald Geikin’s works were shown in large joint exhibitions, it could regularly show even a small number of works, but since the 90s Geikin’s works have not been shown to the general public. This is also the aim of the cycle “Generation” – to show those authors who deserve to know their works:

The exhibition of Romuald Geikin’s paintings and watercolors “Convergence” in the exhibition halls of the 4th floor of the Latvian National Museum of Art will be on view until August 23.
