The police received reports on Friday evening from several people who allegedly saw the Romanian woman hitting the children on the train on the way to Oslo S.
– There must have been Romanian families on their way to Oslo S, so the number of people involved is approximately 30 people. About 10 of them are children. The woman was among this traveling party, and she is said to have beaten several of the children, says operations manager Rune Hekkelstrand to Dagbladet.
– The emergency services moved out and have been, and are, on the scene with several resources – regular patrols from the police, but also the crime watch, the child protection watch and the police’s immigration unit are in place, he says.
Hekkelstrand says that the police took six of the children to the emergency department for a check-up.
– None of the children are seriously injured, but we ensure that they receive the necessary supervision, he says.

Hekkelstrand describes matters as very delicate and complex.
– There have been many emotions, and language challenges, he explains.
He says that there were also many spectators at the scene.
– We are used to people filming what the police do, and given the nature and scope of this case, we are prepared for videos to start trending on social media, he says.
But these will hardly show the full picture, he warns:
– That is why we are going out with this – to explain our decisions, including the fact that we took the six children with us. Videos of us doing it can be taken out of context so it looks very dramatic and obviously not good. So for us it is important to explain the situation and that we did what we did to ensure legal certainty for those involved, and to investigate the damages. We did it because we want to help the children.
– We are still on the scene to ensure legal certainty and dignity for the others in the entourage, he says.

The woman who allegedly hit the children is taken to the police station.
– The plan is to question her when things have calmed down a bit, says Hekkelstrand.
– What is her status?
– She is suspected of having committed violence against children. We are working to investigate whether she should be arrested.
– Is she cooperative?
– As I said – there are many emotions at play, and language challenges. This applies not only to this woman, but also to the other adults in the traveling party, and the children.
Hekkelstrand says that the police are working on interviewing witnesses at the scene, as well as that they will carry out other investigations – such as, for example, going through video material.
– We are working to map what has happened, and who was involved, including who they are, and their connection to the country – since they came by train from the south, says the operations manager.
