Rome and Monte-Carlo have always rejected Federer
If we focus on the most prestigious tournament categories (Grand Slams, Olympics, Masters 1000), the Swiss are only missing three titles. The first that comes to mind: the Olympic tournament. Federer certainly won gold in London 2012, but he was in doubles, with Wawrinka. For the single, the Swiss managed to get only silver. It was 2012, also in London, after the defeat against Andy Murray.
The other two major tournaments missing the Swiss record are played on clay. The Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo and Rome never ended up in the pockets of the Swiss, who nevertheless had several opportunities to get his hands on the trophies. Federer has reached the final of Monegasque and Roman tournaments four times. For Monaco, it is four defeats, including three against Rafael Nadal. The most recent was against his compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in 2014. In Rome the Swiss lost to Spaniard Félix Mantilla in 2003, to Rafael Nadal in 2006 and 2013 and to Novak Djokovic in 2015.

Going down the categories of the tournaments (ATP 500 or 250), we find traces of different tournaments that obviously did not win. However, having lost just three titles in the world’s most competitive tournaments speaks volumes about the Swiss’s performance.
