Back as the winner: Roger Federer beat another top 30 opponent on his comeback in Doha, the Briton Dan Evans.

The tennis and sports world looked excitedly to Doha, and it was not disappointed: Upon his return to the competition circuit after 13 months, Roger Federer showed an impressive performance and also convinced with mental strength. These are the most important findings of the 7:6 (10:8), 3:6, 7:5 against the Briton Daniel Evans (ATP 28).

Federer had trained with Evans almost every day in Dubai for the past few weeks and played against two dozen sets. That was, he admitted, an advantage. This is probably one of the reasons why he seemed confident from the start and didn’t have to sound out the opponent first. The first serve carried him through the first sentence with an astonishing rate of 83 percent and simplified some things. As was to be expected after such a long break, there were weaknesses in the return, the error rate was sometimes high, the automatisms were obviously missing.
