New York.- The iconic ice skating rink of the Rockefeller Center is open on a limited basis in time for the holidays, amid the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic that devastated the city of New York.
The sunken track in the center of Manhattan began hosting skaters on Saturday afternoon as part of a tradition that dates back to the 1930s, according to the website of the Rockefeller Center.

The rink is running at reduced capacity, with a skating time limited to 50 minutes. Masks are required as an additional security measure against coronavirus pandemic.
The rink will be open every day from 9 am to midnight until January 17.
According to legend, the website says, the rink was inspired by “a Depression-era skate seller who demonstrated his product by skating on the icy water of the Rockefeller Center fountain.”
The rink was officially opened as a “skating pond” on Christmas Day 1936. It was supposed to be temporary, but it became so popular that it became a permanent fixture for the Christmas season.
Another seasonal accessory, the Christmas tree of the Rockefeller Center, was installed last weekend and will power up on December 2.
